IT Security Tips November
Technical measures, like setting up a firewall and installing an anti-virus software, are not enough. It’s time to zoom in on your employees’ behaviour regarding IT-security. Are they putting your company’s security at risk?
Follow the tips below on how to stimulate awareness amongst co-workers and increase IT security:
- Change the way of thinking. Employees have to stop thinking of IT security as a purely technological issue. Instead, they should be aware that their online activity (opening suspicious e-mails, visiting unsafe websites, never changing their passwords, etc.) is as much a part of the company’s IT security as technical measures themselves.
- Consider an awareness training and appoint an awareness officer. Some managers think that trainings are a waste of time. However, trainings can help implement certain guidelines. In order to ensure an ongoing attentiveness towards IT security, appoint one of your co-workers as an awareness officer. He or she will be a permanent contact person in case of questions.
- Make security behaviour measurable. If you are able to measure the IT security behaviour of your employees you can detect possible security breaches and set specific goals for improvement. Possible ways of measuring awareness and behaviour are knowledge assessments or surveys.
Encouraging co-workers to pay more attention to their behaviour regarding IT security ensures the overall security of the company. Ultimately, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
